According to Wikipedia, the berries are bitter but edible when cooked and can be made into jellies. I'd leave them for the birds as an important source of winter food..
It does look like its related! Though I haven't found an exact match it has to be in the family! Thanks very much - apparently good for taking cuttings and for beginner bonzai trees.
All the callicarpa I can find pictures of has much bigger leaves, these are teardrop shaped leaves with the broad end away from the stem, the berries are about redcurrant sized ( a little bigger than a smilie ) but are pinker side of red and matt not shiny, here is the closest I could get reasonable focus, colour is pretty close to true...
