Would like to join in too. Someone mentioned freezing ginger. Could anyone please tell me if you have to open freeze it in little mounds or can you break off bits easily?

I peel mine before freezing, then shave bits off with a sharp knife when I need some.

I visited the local farm shop last week and lo and behold there were shooting (not stars) but ginger. Now what do I do?

Im with Bren on this one, I just peel in, wrap it in cling film and pop it in the freezer. When I need some I just attack it with a shape knife, cutting off chunks and counting my fingers when I am done

I put mine in the blitzer then spread it out on clingfilm like a long sausage. Roll it up - freeze - snap off when required.

Snap Brengirl! That's exactly what I do! I also do a half garlic/half ginger blitz for curries!

As for growing ginger, I grow a dozen or so plants each year, mainly as presents for friends. They do appear to have a short life, the longest I've got one to last is 18months, probably as they are expecting their roots to be harvested. I grow mine in pots of bog-standard potting compost with the sprouting bits poking through the compost. I've never got a huge harvest but it's fun to do!

Oh flipping heck!.....I wish I had found this earlier. I cut off a small piece of ginger today & put it in multi-purpose compost & put it in the shower room (warm & humid). I still may join in with you guys in January.

I too planted what I thought were 'shoots' but they were kidding me. Maybe I should have planted them upside down. Oh well!.. back to the drawing board.
