Snap Brengirl! That's exactly what I do! I also do a half garlic/half ginger blitz for curries!
As for growing ginger, I grow a dozen or so plants each year, mainly as presents for friends. They do appear to have a short life, the longest I've got one to last is 18months, probably as they are expecting their roots to be harvested. I grow mine in pots of bog-standard potting compost with the sprouting bits poking through the compost. I've never got a huge harvest but it's fun to do!

Oh flipping heck!.....I wish I had found this earlier. I cut off a small piece of ginger today & put it in multi-purpose compost & put it in the shower room (warm & humid).
