  • Raised Beds

Hi all, having on a small garden and with the mild success i had with icegem lettece in tubs last year, I am looking for the best place where i could buy cheap(but look nice) raised beds from. Any recommendations from fellow growers?

    Thanks

    Steve

Has to be 'build your own'. That way you can have just what YOU want. Good quality timber is a little expensive but would be cheaper than buying the comercially available raised beds.

It is not a difficult job. Four pieces of timber cut to the required length and screwed together with a piece of 2 x 2 in each corner for added strength at the joints. Simple.

I have made all of mine using 2 inch thick boards. Give it a go, you'll have fun and save a bob or two into the bargain.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

I'm with snuffer on this one...make your own to size using scaffold boards & stian the outsides if you wish.

We used 1 x 6" treated boards from a farm supplies shop- thy have been sturdy enough.
The problem with any boards is that if you try and line them - or put something else in front to disguise them, then the slugs and snails will thank you for their 21stC motel!!!
We tried to get free scaffolding boards - but with no success- these seemed to be the cheapest option as an alternative.

We're giving up our site next year , but we'll certainly be bringing the boards with us!!!

You could also use decking boards which look really nice but may be more expensive.....you need to measure the area & price it all out.

I bought decking boards on offer when I made mine.

B&Q had them at £2.79 I think it was [less than £3] per 2.4m length in the weeks up to Easter - as soon as the hols hit they doubled in price.

Wickes had an offer which came in slightly higher than that B&Q offer, a few weeks back.

Thanks all for the speedy responses. Considering I am useless for a bloke at any DIY, I am thinking of getting this

              Raised Vegetable Bed (1sqm)

Doesnt seem too bad for the price and looks quite nice for £24 inc delivery. Actually found somewhere cheaper £19 + brace supports £2.95.

Uulwyn - I'm a tightwad and wouldn't consider buying in a ready made raised bed. As long as I have the ability to saw and screw - and cordless tools; then even if I had a million £ in the bank I'd still make them myself.

But, each to their own; If you wanted more than one; I'd be tempted to make some for you and bring them up to you.

uulwyn, i'm no DIY'er but i got some second hand 13' scaffolding boards for £3.50, and made a 13' x 4' bed for under a tenner. Just cut one of the boards into 3 and put 4 x corner posts made from offcuts found laying around, hammered a couple of nails and job done, one day I might even paint them.

Thanks a million for this kind offer, and thanks to everyone for there words of wisdom, but alas ive decided just to bite the bullet. It's only £20 per 1m by 1m and i only need 2...Thats how big my lawn at the back is, but at least i wont have to buy them again, everything else will go into tubs!

                    Thanks everyone

Sorry you have had to go down that route. I would not buy a ready made bed either.......it appears you only ever had one choice.
