ordering potatoes

In all of the seed catalogues they say to order seed potatoes early to make sure all the varieties are available, but when is "early"? January? December? Should I be ordering potatoes now?

I ordered mine about a week ago,i figured the lost intrest was nothing and even if i overspend at xmas i will still have spuds.

Not ordered mine yet, did it in December last year and got what I wanted quite happily. I don't want to receive mine too early as it means I have to store them and, assuming you're ordering from a decent supplier then they can probably store them better than we can at home.

You can but as soon as I order things I want to have them so I'm better waiting a bit

I ordered mine in mid December last year and had them delivered before Xmas. Far to early and lost a few as I did not have suitable storage. Lesson learned.

One of the chaps on my course at college works at the local nursery/GC - so I'm going to ask him for a nudge when the pots are in and I'll grab my kestrels then. And get the rest at the potato day at Ryton. Any excuse for a cup of tea and a cake.

I begrudge paying postage costs so always buy mine locally in the Spring!

The other thing about doing it this way is that you put the emphasis on the supplier to store them and keep them in a reasonable condition prior to purchase!
