  • Can you identify this-Friend or Foe?

Digging my 'new' vegetable patch I have come across some of these creatures--Are they Friend or Foe?
The tile this is photographed on is about 6"sq. It doesn't move very fast but has a side-way movement like a snake.
I have 'looked this up and it seems to be a Friend but I thought GYO friends may be able to confirm this.---Thanks--Kathie

I agree with Nick that it looks like a centipede but I've never seen them move in the way you describe, could be a different type from what we get up here in Scotland thou.

Hello Kathie, I'm sorry but I don't think that looks like a centipede. I think It looks like a worm of some kind. Sorry can't be more specific. Maybe you'll get other suggestions.

It is Haplophillus subterraneus Eats Beetles, Slugs, Snails Large Wums. A Centipides worst enemy is another as they are cannabalistic.

I found one or two when digging the soil and 'turning it over'. I have'nt discovered any in the Flower borders--only the patch of ground that wasn't cultivated when we moved here about five years ago.
Thanks for all your replies--I take it that it is a Friend? I tried to 'Kill' (by cutting it in half) the first one I found and couldn't because it was soooooo tough so just put them in a jam jar!! I only found about three.
                    Do hope they are friends!!--Kathie

Benacres absolutely right Kathie, and the answer to your question is they are beneficial to gardeners. I've put a link to some info for you.
