With the intention of growing my own I bought 25 little baby Christmas trees 6years ago and planted them well spaced on a bank. They cost just under £6 for the 25.The first year they didn't do much but now some of them are 7-8ft tall and would be perfect Christmas trees but now i dont want to cut them down.
I still buy one every year from the guy who sold me the baby trees.

Not sure what species, will see if mum can rem. Yes it was a potted, rooted tree. They've kept it in a reasonably small pot so that they can move it around. They brought it from a Notcutts garden centre I think.

Most pot grown trees are potted up as saplings and then the pots are buried in the ground and the trees are treated as normal trees until they are ready for sale. The difference in price can be atrributed to the extra man hours incurred in burying the pots and digging them up again four to six years later.

Growing softwood trees from cuttings is, as jeanied points out, very technical and very difficult. It's also a bit pointless as they grow so easily from seed. Even if you could get the cuttings to take you'd wait years for it to reach a usable size. Buy a fake one or a potted one and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Purchase your artificial one and on the way home pop into a garage and pick up a few of those minicab car air fresheners :-)
