  • So how do i get seeds.

So how do i get my own seeds from veg i have grown myself.

I have absolutely no idea how i get seeds from the likes of onions, shallots etc.

I know how to from chilli's and tomatoes etc because they are part of the fruit.

    Any advice is greatly received.

    Many thanks
    Stout hearts, strength and honour.

Onions. I would save the smallest Onions and use as sets the same with Shallots and Garlic. Or with onions let some "Go to Seed" and collect the ripe seeds at the end of the year. just grow them in your flower border.
    Good luck

Shallots and garlic can be saved for planting the following year and will produce more of the same. A small saved onion if planted the following year will generally, run straight to seed, as will a big one saying that.

If you want your own seed from onions its logical to use the best that you have to set seed as surely you want more of the same quality and not a bed full of runts.

Onion sets are an onion that has its growth arrested when tiny and before it has completed a complete growing season, hence they do not (generally) run to seed unless fooled by extreme weather conditions into thinking that they have. You can again replant an onion grown from a set the fiollowing year and it should seed.

To collect the seed from onions when they are nearly ripe you can pop a paper bag over the seed head and secure with an elastic band to catch the seed but as our weather is so variable I just cut them off when nearly ripe and dry off in a cool place
