Potatoes: How to store ??

Hi all
Just dug some spuds up that i planted at the end of summer (had some today.....beautiful !!) Got some left and wondered how i should store them?? Want them nice and fresh for xmas dinner, hopefully !!

I dig mine as I need them.............problem is remembering where they are once the tops have died down!

PS If you've already dug them up, just bury them in a hole in the ground (preferably lined with straw) til christmas!

They want to be in the dark and cool. so a hessian or thick brown paper bag (or a cardboard box will do) in the garage or shed. They should easily grace your Christmas table, and last for a couple of months longer.

I dug mine up at the end of the summer as it saves me from having to dig on demand and means that the spuds don't get slug or frost damage. I left them in the light for a few hours to dry off and harden a bit then bagged them up in hessian sacks which I store in the garage. Check them regularly for any rotting but no probs so far and they should be fine for eating for a good while yet - which is as well seeing as I have tonnes of the things!

Mine go into 'proper' paper sacks. Don't ever use anything plastic. You want something that will breathe so either paper, card, or hessian among other things ;-)

i use the paper sacks the chooks feed comes in, turn 'em inside out & they've worked for me so far

Have stored carrots like this. Very good way of RRR

One more, probably even stupidier (thats surely not even a word !!) question.
I still have some tatties in the ground for xmas dinner !! Will this bad frost have killed them or should i still dig them up ??

we keep ours in hessian sacks in the garage and they seem to do fine there. Make sure that you check them every now and then as one bad un could contaminate the whole sack

It's not a stupid question and not one that's easy to answer. Basically it depends on how bad the frost has been and how deeply the ground has frozen. Dig down (if you can) and find out. If they're OK then great if not then dig up earlier or protect on the surface next year

Just a quick update !
I had laid one layer of 'bubble' wrap with a slit down the middle in a feeble attempt to defeat the frost and guess what........it worked. The soil was easily diggable (again surely not a proper word but heyho !) Beautiful tatties for xmas and beyond, very happy at my first attempt to defy the elements !!!
Bring on the spring !
