  • Storing rhubarb crowns prior to replanting.

At the weekend I thinned out half my rhubarb patch, splitting the crowns and replanting some parts, passing the others on to friends for their son. I suspect he won't get chance to do anything with them before the weekend at the earliest. It didn't occur to me to wonder how long the crowns will last before being planted, and how they should be stored, especially as we have snow and frost forecast for later this week. Will they be OK stored outside with the roots exposed?

They used to be cut up and left on the surface of the soil for two or three weeks. As long as they don't dry out completely (unlikely this year) they should be fine.

I bought some crowns on-line and they arrived potted up in dry compost. Seller said best to keep it dry, outside under cover until ready to plant it out.
