I too am giving the raised bed thing a go,i'm using old joist's which a friend of mine gets from a scrap yard, decided on this as my 3 year old likes to help and thought it would save me cringing every time she runs over what i have just dug or tramping over my plants.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a son who will be 4 in March. He doesn't delibratly step on them, but sometimes he looses his balance and the result is flat plants. He is really helpful too, he helps we do the weeding which keeps him out of trouble.

The first veg I grew was sweetcorn, really easy just remember to water everyday. I had lovely tasting sweetcorn, was sorry when I ran out. Tomatoes are fairly easy, just remember to pinch the side shoots out and water regulary or they will split. My husband and I grew potatoes for the first time last year, they were so much nicer then shop bought. They are good to start with too.
