  • Planting garlic

Bearing in mind the only thing that I have ever planted, was a lad who was after my lass and some chilli's that just germinated today (I'm wetting little jal's head later tonight), what do I do with the bulb of garlic that I bought because it had shoots (can't believe I am now looking for old veg instead of fresh now).

Is it shoots up and root down? Also in what bearing in mind, it will be indoor for at least 10 weeks.

Shoots up and roots down. Break it up into cloves first.

You really should have planted garlic back in Sept/Nov time but I belive you can get a crop from a spring planting.

Cheers muchly. If I may be so bold as to ask, in what mixture and container and how deep? How about regularity of watering.

I have some 6" plant pots. Any good?

Plant pots should be fine with common or garden compost. If I remember right you want the tips just under the surface, say 1 cm. If I am wrong someone will shoot me down in flames very shortly

I usually put mine about an inch below but I grow mine out in a raised bed. Not sure about how many to a pot though, I usually space them about 6 inches apart. I suppose it depends on how big the pot is.

Well they're in 6 inch pots, so maybe two cloves to a pot at a push then?

Don't forget (all going well) each clove will grow into a bulb of it's own. I'd probably only put one clove in each, though to be honest the odd time I have grown garlic in pots it's not turned out too good, so you might be better ignoring me

The stuff from the raised beds is usually a good crop though

I planted mine is 6 inch pots last January and then around March time transferred them into my raised bed. I had a really good crop

I planted some in Feb last year down at t'llotment cause we didn't get it until late autumn and were disorganised. They came out fine and were no worse than the ones I stuck in at home in the autumn so you've still some time I reckon. They were in the ground though, whenever I've seen them in pots they've been one to a pot.

We planted some last year at the end of January, and they did ok. I'm planting some this week, as I failed to get any going before Christmas. Mine will go straight into a border. I sometimes put mine in the fridge before planting, but not bothering this year.
