Back on gardening diaries, my old father, a true Victorian head gardener, kept what I suppose is a diary but to me is a series of disjointed notes. Some of the advice is still good if you can follow the threads through, for which you need at least one bottle of red for every subject. I do a similar thing to him but as my writing is so bad, I often can't read what I have written 30 minutes later, I've taken to just jotting things onto Notepad. A spread-sheet would be a little bit too organised I think and so would bore me.

Last year was my first complete year on the allotment so I bought a page a day A5 diary from the pound shop. It's been great, I recorded when I sowed any seed whether in the propagator or on the plot and I find myself referring to it again for sowing times this year. I found that was all I really had time to do although it would have been nice to record the amounts of crops taken from the lottie. A sort of pat on the back for all the hard work

I have a lovely fabric covered thick notebook that I use as my 'gardening diary', but I don't manage to keep on top of it.
I started it last year when I started veggie growing, but during April-Sept when the garden was going great guns, the pages are depressingly empty and I now can't remember what I did, what was good, what was not so good, etc...
This is my second week of gardening this year, and so far I've kept on top of it. Will see what happens when the major sowing/growing/harvesting season gets under way again.Last edited by WeeGarden; 06-02-2010, 01:31 AM.

Could I lplease request a copy of the spreadsheet from either Fi or Hazel,it would save the endless pieces of paper that I seem to have with plans on them. Hows the job going Fi I'm intrigued as to which garden centre it is as my son lives in Headley Down and when we go to visit he always gives me a tour of the garden centres. You are so lucky because you can get Hazel bean sticks which I always used but have failed to get any here in Yorkshire. They are a bit awkward to bring back as well!!

I know a lot of the Victorian Head Gardeners kept diaries which were part of there work but generally I think (rightly or wrongly) women keep diaries more often than men?
I would love to be able to keep a diary but they always end up like the numerous Bloggs I've started i.e. They're lucky if they last a month!!!!!Last edited by SMT; 05-02-2010, 01:15 PM.My 3D Pumpkin Carvings

I use that too Snadger - but I don't put photos in there. I can add bits about my quilting and cooking on the blog too, so it's not all about gardening.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
