  • When to pot up onion seedlings

    Hi
This is my first time of growing onions from seed. I have sown Long Red Florence onion seeds and they have now germinated. At what stage do I thin them out and pot them up?

I usually wait till the bent over leaf has straightened up. I've just done it with mine and potted them into biggish modules, one per cell. They look pathetic! However, I know they'll fatten up.

As Flum says, when the hook has straightened up. I would put them into small pots or modules of a cell tray and then pot on when the rooots have filled the container.

Thanks Flum and Rustylady. At the moment they are in trays in a cooler part of the house. Once potted up, can I move them to my mini gh or would that be too cold for them?

If your short of space you can plant them out in clumps rather than singly as they will push apart and find their own space.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
