Worried about Broad beans?

Hi

We are new to gardening and we planted some broad beans in nov and they were doing really well and then we had the snow and they have now started to grow sideways!!! the stems seem to been bent by the snow.

Is there anything i can do?

I'd put some canes/sticks next to them and encourage the back up again.
This happened to us last year!

I must confess that this is the reason I stopped sowing broadies in the autumn. I only got an earlier crop by 3 weeks and they were all over the place, with bits of cane stuck in. I'm not a tidy gardener but this got on me wick! I hope you can make them stand up again - they'll still crop but if the beans are on the ground the slugs will have a party.

I wouldn't try and train them up a cane, because the bent bit won't unbend anyway.

I thought a plants natural tendency was to grow upwards, all to do with a chemical production in the cell I think, but could be very wrong. The root grows toward the gravitational centre of the earth and the stem away, so they plant should grow upwards after the kink.

Yes, the chemicals are called auxins.

they were fine for the first 6-8 inches and then it snowed and coved them for about 3-4 days and then they have started to grow all funny!!! I will just give them love and hope for the best.

You then have an 8" trailing bit along the ground followed by an upright bit. Looks wierd. I don't bother now.

Mine also bent over, but I noticed at the weekend, that besides beginning to grow up, most are also shooting again from the base.
