Hi there Jan, big welcome. Enjoy your time here, share as much or as little as you want. It gets quite daft sometimes but laughter is good for you.

Unless of course you fall off your chair in the process.

I do like the look of a veg patch when its been "square footed", but being hopeless with sums and maths I just sow things as and where I feel inspired to do so...veg intermingled with flowers, its a right jumble, but I love it. I've just put in some onion sets amongst my poached egg flowers. I'm allergic to proper rows ... there ain't no straight lines in Nature.

Oh Jan, sounds obvious, but plant what you love to eat...this year I dug up four carrier bags of Jerusalem Artichokes and felt compelled to eat them all - but, I just can't, they're 'orrible.

Hi Two_Sheds, haven't you been following the thread about JA?? They are classy farty balls apparently and we are all growing them now. Do they really taste horrible???!! They were quite nutty when we tried them raw as a taster before planting...

Hi Jan Welcome to the vine!

Two Sheds, I was going to grow Jerusalem Artichokes too but decided to try them first. I agree, the are horrible, decided not to bother, growing asparagus instead.

                Hi Jan
And welcome to the vine. I've got one metre square beds (link-a-bord) and although I don't stick to the strict square foot method do prefer using this method. I found the long rows of things gardening rather daunting and of course in this weather, nobody can walk on their ground while I can get on with tending my raised beds.
As I also suffer from a bad back I find them easier to tend and also I can clear the plot a little at a time, putting in the raised beds as I go, have got to seven out of the total of fifteen planned.

I like that style Sue. Everybody has to do what works for them, and if square yard by sqare yard gets you there , stick with it. I made much of my own garden the same way.

We think they are great. We leave the skins on and roast them alongside spuds and parsnips etc. Yum!

A tad impatient aren't we? try mustard and cress, it goes quite quickly, but then so do chick peas or any other sprouting seeds at the right temperature. Enjoy!!

Hi there two sheds - funny you should say that, I was going to post if anyone wants some jerusalem artichokes (fuseau - the long smoth kind) I can send some, but I bet there won't be any takers! Was given a few last year and they took over like 'triffids'. Got several pounds per plant and now wondering what to do with them all - at first they were a novelty but now realised don't really like them. Felt obliged to cook 'em as only thing growing last year (except world's ugliest and hairiest carrot that is!)
Anyway this year hope to have much more success, especially with all the tips.
Does sqare foot planting really depend on good maths? I'm hopeless - maybe I'll just try a bit and fit some things in where I can?! Best of both worlds - anyway, fingers crossed.
Also, last year at Birmingham show I bought some 'currant tomatoes' - looked impressive on the stand, anyone tried them?
                            best, Jan
