Tis just a bit too soon this far north TallGirl. I never plant out french beans/runner beans, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes or anything else not frost hardy until the end of May/beginning of June. I start putting them out in the day time, and bringing them in at tea-time about mid-May, so they're all toughened up and ready to plant at the end of the month
      Hope that helps

I'm only just starting to harden off some stuff now..and I'm a little bit further south . the frostcheck site says our last frost is the middle of May but I still don't trust it.

In the past and even yesterday I have given up on germination only to find on subsequent sowing I get "what the hell is that syndrome" They do it just to confuse lol

I, personally think that many of us try to grow a little too early and slightly out of season.
Yes, we get some good results and sometimes not so good. We sow seeds in too low a temperature for optimum growth, yet some of the little @@@@@ still amazingly poke through.
I am sure many times I would get better plants by raising them slightly later, but that would spoil the fun.

I never take my gardening too seriously, no matter what some people might think, and after all, it is just a hobby.

So as the old saying goes Bex, 'Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.'

I do get disheartened by things that fail to germinate, but as this is my first year, I think I'm doing okay. Apart from the flowers, but I'm not that bothered about the flowers.

I do talk to my seedlings though. Especially when I'm watering them: 'Come on little ones, it's your turn now'.

Oh, and yesterday, I told Floyd Mayfeather (our budgie), who was edging down the curtains eyeing up my seedling, that if he touched them, I'd rip his head off ;o)

                LOL, that made me chuckle

I've had real problems with chillis and peppers this year, I just can't get them to germinate no matter which method I use. Out of about 30 chilli seeds I've only got one plant, fingers crossed the little one makes it.

I did the same things last year and had 90% success. I don't know what's going on...

Hi Bex, I thought I had failed with some of my seeds and like you felt quite sad and disheartened , as a newcomer to GYO I have no idea I just followed the instructions on the packet and waited and waited...........nothing , then today I have come home from work taken a peek in the greenhouse and hey ho I have 3 courgettes peeking back at me. What joy !
Moral of my story is HAVE PATIENCE it took longer than the packet said it would.

I planted my peppers in an unheated propagator thingy in these little discs that you poured warm water on and they expanded. I'm sure they have a posh name but I'm too much of a newbie to know what it is.
So far maybe 50% have popped up but thats good enough for me.
I had peppers galore in my plastic greenhouse last year but none ever ripened/turned red and then some beetle thing got in and ate into most of them, so I'm having another go this year.I'm determined to eat at least one red pepper that I've grown myself.
Good luck with your chilli plant.
Its nice to be important but its more important to be nice
