  • Aren't failures disheartening?

I know it's early in the season and that the light isn't right yet etc. but when a seed fails I still feel really disheartened, or is this just me getting too attached to a little seed?

I know what you mean - but an empty seed tray is another opportunity.

What did you fail with? Any advice we can give you? (apart from, try again!)

I think we should expect a certain amount of failure sowing so early in the year. I'm happy with 50% success due to my impatience.

I've had 100% success thus far. I've successfully managed to not sow a thing this year.

All my seedlings are my babies, I get so excited when they pop there little leaves through the compost, and really disappointed when the don't...But, my saying is "Have seeds, will sow".

I'm struggling with tomatoes and sweet peppers, I know it's early but I either get them to germinate and then they keel over or they don't bother showing their heads at all. It's all new seed too.

When you planning on starting then Wayne, I think I'm going to leave it later next year.

Don't get me wrong its not putting me off sowing at all if something fails I re-sow but it is sad as they are babies.

I'd planted some sweet peppers probably two weeks or more ago in a heated prop... nothing.. Went to it this morning to bin the seed tray contents, and noticed that all of them were poking up with their little U bends through the compost. Impaitence is my worst thing!

                    * wonders how much good stuff he's thrown away heh

Are you keeping the compost too damp do you think? I find that if I sow in damp compost I rarely if ever need to re-wet it before the plants show through. I don't use a heated prop and I get toms up in a week, chillies in a couple. You've still got time to try again.

due to the temperature,i wont be sowing for another 2/3 weeks yet as im that further north and my greenhouse is unheated, better you lose a few seedlings now than big plants later on,as there is still time for you to resow....

I admit to being a bit weird but I think failures are a necessary evil, because of them they make the sucesses even sweeter

                              Regrets, I've had a few...

This year so far I have sown parsnips three times and lost about two and a half of them, and lovingly nurtured runner and French beans and courgettes indoors, then planted them out too soon and watched them die overnight in the cold. They're my babies and it hurts! (Ok, so I'm going to love them, nurture them, kill them and eat them... maybe this is a little bit sick!)

I guess we just have to put it down to experience.
