Grass - Transplant

Now I have an area of the garden which I'm building into a adventure playground for the little'n. The area is grassed and I have already started to clear most of the grass however there is still a large patch still grassed.

Now on another area of the garden I want it grassed but the grass seed is not growing through quick enough.

Is it possible to transplant the grass from the old area to the new if I lift the top of the grass and turf with a sharp shovel?

Yes, just 'slice' off the top and transplant. It's easier if you cut it into sections before lifting the turf then you can roll it into nice neat rectangles and lay them like bricks (ie cuts not touching) wherever you want.

if you can wait a few weeks,you wont need to transplant,when the weather warms you will be mowing to keep it in check,if its just very thin,rake the area well,i start my grass seed off in a bucket,mixed with topsoil, dampened,left 4/5 days in cold g/house, then spread it over the problem area,a light misting of water....job done.it will bulk up in no time,and roots really fast.

The old way of making turves was to have a turf box which is basically a small wooden box the size and depth of a turve. Lay the upside down turve in it, which should be about 2 inches thick and use a knife or traditionally and old scythe blade to level off the roots with the edge of the box.

Level the area to be turved with the addition of a bit of sand and work from a plank of wood set on the first turves. This will mean that the turves will be level when laid!
