  • Jasmine - clotted cream

    Hi all

We have a beautiful Jasmine in our garden that was a moving in present from my parents.

We planted it nearly three years ago and last year it was superb. Very prolific and the flowers lasted for months.

I decided to cut it back a few weeks ago, because I want it to grow along and flatter to the fence, but I'm panicking that I've killed it. I've never pruned anything before and the tips of the parts I've chopped off look very dead.

Is there anything I could have done that would have killed it?

Hi Pidge - now that picture makes me long for summer! How idyllic!
The summer jasmine loses its leaves in winter. Yours looks really prolific and healthy - it can be pruned hard in winter but you will lose some flowers. It is unlikely you killed it altogether unless you chopped it off at root level.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Yes, I must admit I felt the same longing when I went through last years pictures to find this one!

What I've done is cut all the branches that were along the top of the fence and sticking out so its now neatly trimmed by the fence. I guess I'm just panicking because I've never done it before and it's my favourite plant but I would like it to be neater and tighter to the fence this year if possible.

It sounds like it will be fine! Just weave in all the new shoots so they don't flop all over the place. As you can see on your photo, all the flowers are on the older branches and the new shoots are just the ones with leaves on. These are where this year's flowers come from, so if you have cut them all off you may have to wait for a year!

That's not the end of the word, they're very messy when they fall!!

To be honest, it's the leaves I love most, with the purple tinge around the edges they look almost 3d, stunning plant and one I will always have, despite the mess when the flowers and then leaves fall.

Thanks for your help, I'll post back when we're in May/June and see how it is xx
