hi,got some dwarf italian bean seeds(bobis d albenga to be exact). when is the best time to get them started in doors? gonna start them in small pots? cheers in advance..
totally mad on growing veg and keeping bantams!!!!
Remember you can't plant them out till there's no dancger of frost. I always take the end of May as definite cut-off date. they grow fast so you'll end up with them floppy and leggy of you sow too early.
Leave them till later in the month, as Paul says. I've got my beans seeds out to look at and stroke but they aren't going in till the end of the month!
I'd say you're far enough south to give it a go. Provided you protect them suitably when you plant them out.
I'm not saying that in any expert capacity though, merely because I sowed dozens of Beans in Rootrainers last weekend! My patch is sheltered, and I have about a hundred plastic bottle cloches to use as protection!

I adore beans in every shape and form and am having to restrain myself! Got a bit over excited last year and planted my dwarf beans too early. When I put them out into the plot although the frost didn't get them they sulked for ages.
I put a load of dwarf beans into bags of compost to chit last weekend, and most have sprouted; so today's job is to shift the trays of onions outdoors and get the beans into root trainers/paper pots and toilet roll insides so that I can get the next batch into compost chitting.
I'm growing some rare beans this year, and didn't want to lose any to rot so am sowing a smaller amount each week to keep a sharp eye on things.
