  • lawn feed on plug plants

    Hi

Can i use wilko's lawn feed [15% nitrogen] on some plug plants to help them grow more leaves etc

    thanks

I personally don't feed plug plants at all: there is some nutrient in the compost, usually.

If you over-feed, you tend to get lots of lush green growth that is very susceptible to aphids etc. Grow your plants a little harder and they will withstand pests & diseases better.

no i think is they were to wet then the plant/leaves would go all soft.

Sorry ...rewind here...plug plants arrive at your house when?..you pot them on immediately into ....? and they are growing on where?

Plants get their nutrition through their rootsystem which to thrive needs to be constantly just damp...not enough soil sounds like your obvious problem... plugs fine for germination and shipping.

Lawn feed is designed for making lawns green (funny that)...infact it's a quickfix and isn't even that good for lawns because (long story short)..you need to feed and airiate the rootsystem.

Buy a balanced feed like blood ,fiish and bone....or make comfrey/nettle tea.

they arrived over a week ago and there into modulded trays of 40. Growing on a table near a window. So i can only use fish blood and bone as a top dressing

BFB shouldn't come into contact with plants' stem but can be added to boost potting compost prior to planting...BALANCED was the bit I was emphasising... lawn feed way too nitrogen heavy....any proprietary liquid feed should do... again though, VERY weak so as not to burn the roots...although to be fair they shouldn't need too much feed with quality compost. They wont be in module trays that long I suppose?.. and it is easy to damage a plant by over feeding than under.

Certainly it would not be lack of food in a week. More likely the problem was caused before you got em. They should pick up if not get your money back.

                        - pot them on as soon as possible, into "just a bit" bigger pots or modules
                        - mix a bit of BFB in the compost if you must (I don't bother)
                        - get them into the light. Your table is likely to be much darker than they're used to or need

-Sorry, I understood that he HAD potted them into bigger modules
-I don't normally bother much with BFB in compost till final potting but then I mainly use excellent quality compost...most commercially available is increasingly poor.(both in water retention/drainage and nutrients)

To be honest they don't look bad to me. Give it a few days and see how they get on. I certainly don't feed seedlings. I don't think they need it.
