I took a cutting from a friends strawberry plant last year and it is now a good size and has survived the winter really well. I can also see a few flower buds on the plant. Now does this mean it will produce strawberries this year or am i being too ambitious?? I have no idea how old the strawberry plant was that i took the cutting from, but that did fruit last summer.

Yes it should fruit this year. Some folks pinch flowers off in the first year to encourage the plant to establish itself and then get a better crop next year but you don't have to, especially as you planted the runner last year. It's maybe a bit early for flowers as if they get hit by frost they'll blacken in the middle. Some people put them in the greenhouse for an early crop. Mine are looking pathetic at the mo - no where near flowering. I reckon we're about a month behind what with the carp weather
