  • will the snow damage my garlic?

    Hi there!
i planted some garlic bulbs in pots a while ago and put them outside.
This morning they were covered in snow,
    will they be ok?
im so worried about my little babies,
maybe i could make them all little cardigans,
ive also got some wild garlic bulbs!
what can i do to protect them during this cold will a plastic bag do???

I guess they will be okay. Apparently garlic require a good cold spell to make the cloves 'split'.

      Hi Buttercup,

I agree with Shirl, they need the frost to split the cloves. This is one of the good things about this weather!

      Wild garlic? I am jelous

Your garlic will be fine - as Shirley points out, a cold spell is required for autumn planting varieties.
Just check that when the snow melts that your compost is draining away excess meltwater as you do not want the roots to be sitting in a pot of soaking wet compost.
No need for fleece - or for little cardigans - though it would make an interesting photo !!

Lol - definately up for the drink - my 'plot' is my garden - about as far removed from a real plot as you are likely to find! Made some headway last year but then got diagnosed with ME and ended up with a temp job which together meant when I got home from work I managed to keep the tomato and cucumber plants in the greenhouse alive!! Better intentions for the coming season but I have to confess I still haven't planted my garlic - the effort just seems to great at the moment. Spend all day reading the forum instead - saddo that I am

                sorry to hear that shirl!
would love to have a garden,
i have to walk a way through a dodgy estate to get to my nightmare of a plot.
lucky im always armed with my fork and spade!
ive been a bit premature and sown lots of thing that have bolted,
its all a learning curve though, this place is so addictive im on most days whenever my boss isnt around, then i get withdrawls when i get home!
so i guess im pretty sad aswell!

                        Hi Mandy
I do not know if this makes you even more jelous but I have a sea of wild garlic growing very wildly on my allotment. I tried to kill the lot but with no success then I decided to leave it alone when I discovered that it is quite well sought after. I found that it doesn't effect other plants and occasionally I use it for cooking. If you remind me around next August i will send you some bulbs to get you started.
                        Regards
                        Don Vincenzo

Yes Don, very jelous. I use loads of garlic but never had the wild stuff.

                          Don't kill it please

Nick has pointed out I can but seed from Victorias so I am going to try getting some from there. Yum, Yum

Shirl, don't beat yourself up so much. Garlic will survive, and reading the vine all day is about all I can manage some days. I'm sure you have ups and downs, and will be able to make progress when the sun shines a bit more. meanwhile ease down girl and be proud of what you have achieved. Hang in there and keep breathing

Please can we have some bulbs, or seeds, I'd love to scatter them all over the plots. When we started the old boys told us that garlic didn't grow on our lotties, but we have 3 beds doing fine now, just have to see what we get at the end of the season!

Oh, I forgot the chili plant - which is now in my dining room since the storms blew the plastic greenhouse down!

Thanks for your encouragement MB - just feel so darned useless some days!
