is it possible to grow avacado?

in the uk, and from one bought at the grocery store? has anyone done this, and how/ where to do it please?

oh, im dissapointed- i just found out they dont produce edible fruit over here in uk anyway, and there was me anticipating!

No fruit without a glasshouse like kew, but they make quite a cool house plant...eventually tend to end up too big and lanky...ours used to go out in Summer. Gave up in the end...no room.
