Ive love fresh pesto so Ive been trying to grow basil from seed for a couple years now. They germinate and look good for a couple weeks or so then the lovely green leaves start looking brown/yellow and dry. some are in greenhouse some outside. Theyre in sieved soil mixed with compost. I water them if they look dry. Do I need to feed them with something allready?

Ah thanks. Maybe Im not watering enough. I thought because it was a mediteraneian plant it would like it dryish. Ill keep it damp and see. Cheers.Save Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock. Coma and Painted Lady butterflies. Dont cut stinging nettles in summer.

I seem to be ok at growing it, no idea how. I've got two types on the go now, but in our new house they're both indoors. I stripped one plant almost bare the other week and its come back already. I tend to water when the leaves start to wilt, mainly as I forget So far it's working for me.
In my previous house, smaller garden - a lot more sheltered I grew it in an old watering can on the floor. It flowered, and came back next year after dying back with vengence!

Needs lots of warmth as well as keeping moist. It suffers badly from white fly when it gets stressed (e.g. by indifficient water).
I find that once you've grown a pot full, you just need to take off some of the top growth and root it in water for a second pot. Magic!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

northepaul, Im amazed you can keep the Tesco type going, Ive tried for years, couple weeks is my record. And how the heck do the shops grow it, it seems to break every rule in the book, 20 or 30 seedlings rammed in a 3" pot. They allways seem very healthy too, till you get them home, then its downhill all the way.
