    Hi there,

I'm a final year design student working on a project about urban vegetable growing. It seem that a lot of you guys grow in containers?? i would really appreciate any of your tips/advice/comments/grumbles. what do you find easy to grow? whats good about container gardens? whats bad? any tips for making good use of small spaces?

    Thankyou

Hi Carlyis, welcome to the vine I hope that we will be able to give you the information that you need.

I don't grow in containers as a rule because of all the watering that they need. Having said that, this year I am going to grow useful things in the containers I have so that the watering I do will be of some use. Geraniums can go in the soil and take pot luck I have already planted mint and chives in the pots and intend to put basil, coriander and parsley in others. In two zinc baths I have I will grow salad stuff, lettuce, rocket and the like. That is after I have drilled holes in them for drainage, the thought of the ear splitting noise is putting me off

Beat of luck, and I am sure that other 'Grapes' will give you some advice about veg. in containers.

      Hi Carlyis
Welcome to the vine, hope you enjoy your time here and get the answers you need.
We have an 'urban' garden (well a yard really) but don't grow much in containers. We have a allotment for big veg, but I've got some herbs in pots over winter, and this spring we started three potatos in tubs.
Mostly we use our yard for sitting out in during summer, and because we have trees and bushes at the back, it feels quite nice without cramming it full of things to water! You can see a picture on the 'snow' thread if you're interested.

Hi and welcome to the vine.
I also choose not to use tubs and containers often due to the amount of watering required.
However, following the advice on this forum i have made early sowing of carrots and kept them in the greenhouse. If i get an early crop it is worth it.

Hello Carlyis and welcome to the Vine! Don't do alot in pots as I have plenty of ground and hate the thought of having to water, but like Vicki wil hope to do carrots early in pots and I do salads in window boxes.
There are other members who do lots in pots so over to them ................
