  • raised beds

There is an area of the garden aprox 6 foot by 10 ft which is concreted. I wondered if I could build a raised bed here and if so what is the best way to build it and what do I fill it with?

Plants need at least 12" to develop a healthy root system. Therefore the beds should be at least 12" high. 18" will be better.

Since you already have a concrete base to build on, consider brick and mortar sides with a wood topping. It will be dearer than wood. Definitely provide drainage holes at the bottom. Ask a builder to incorporate them when building.

18" high sides really have to be strong so use thick wook like railway sleepers. You could use a membrane if you worried about chemicals in the wood.

Provide holes along the side for netting/ cloch supports. Blue water pipe scrapped from building site will do as support.

On the bottom of the raised bed, place some gravel and then a draining membrane. On top of that some hardwood cuttings, straw followed by manure/ compost. Fill the rest with topsoil.
