I went to buy some asparagus crowns today but they looked shrivelled and dead. I bought seeds instead. I realised I am very late in sowing these, but what will happen? I do have a greenhouse I can shelter them in the winter if need be. Will they catch up next year or not survive?

i purchased 50 asparagus seed in August 09 as a few of my pupils wanted to grow some. I sowed them in modules & got 100% germination. They were potted on as they grew & kept in a well covered cold frame over winter. Come spring I thought I had lost them all as the ferns which died back in autumn 09 just didn't want to show any new growth. However 37 survived & are growing very nicely. I would therefore expect yours to survive & thrive as mine have. Unfortunately the pupils at school have lost interest so I will plant them on one of my allotments, Shame. Anyway with respect what have you got to lose by planting them up. Otherwise why not sow half now & half in spring.
