The difference is really that horses and cows are vegetarians. It's the critturs that eat meat that can have the nasty effect. I wouldn't try composting these. (The faeces that is - I'd happily compost the cat that keeps adding nitrogen to my environment!)

      Hi Martyn
I had exactly the same problem January 2006 - my back garden had been a wilderness for 10 years and used as Dexters loo for 3 or 4 years!
I took it one step at a time - and I insisted that the top layer of grass and all other unmentionables were taken off and put in a skip.
Fortunately my OH helped with this bit!
I was determined that nothing that Dexter had deposited would be left behind - I wasn't going to be eating veg in anything like that!
It worked - it was hard work, but once we had the "top layer" off I divided it up into sections and dug each one in turn.
Just take it easy and divide your plot into sections and to each one at a time.
I didnt use any chemicals etc - and Im still here to tell the tail (sorry - Dexters spelling not mine!)
Good luck - looking forward to hearing how you get on.#
