  • No drainpipe for waterbutt, what's the alternatives?

We only have one downward rainpipe on our house, and it's at the front, right outside the front door, so no chance of having a waterbutt there. OUr downward one at the back is in the nextdoor neighbours garden Other than putting guttering on the shed, what are the other options? We don't have an outside tap so at the moment I am filling buckets and watering cans from inside the house, but that was fine when it was just a few seedlings that needed a sprinkle, to do the whole watering trip now I need to do several trips I thought about the draining from the bath thing, but our bathroom is also at the front of the house, and so is the kitchen, so about as far away as can be from the area I need watering!

How well do you get on with your neighbours? The reason I ask is because I wonder if it would be possible to fit a diverter to the downpipe and direct it into a waterbutt on your side of the fence. Well the pipe is right at the other end of their house so the pipe would have to go a minimum of about 4-5 metres before it could reach a point at which I could put a butt We get on ok, but not that ok I don't think!

Aah, in that case I think I would go for putting guttering on the shed!!

Other alternative is to fit your own downpipe.

My cheapest, scruffy solution would be to have a smaller, discreet water butt at the front door, and link it via hosepipe (syphon) to bigger ones that are a bit more out of the way.

You could re hang the guttering on your side and put in your own down pipe?

Except a drainage system would also have to be dug for the excess water when the butt is full !!!!

Have you space to fix up some polethene/tarp sheeting,as a temporary collecting point,
put 4 posts in the ground, tie the corners of the sheeting onto the corner posts, put a hole in the sheet centre for rain to run into a barrell,or by extending the shed roof into a canopy area, and adding a conecting length of guttering, either way by adding more barrells with a connection pipe between them, you can stor some more water, they will all fill up on their own when it rains,if you get what i am says lol, also if you had extra barrels,is it possible to fill up from the kitchen with a hose, thus saving you some work, just a few ideas,

A non return valve would take care of that, fitted high to the pipe.

Fit another connector to the gutter with an extra down pipe then from your butt run some hosepipe to your drain to take away the excess.

I'm due to have my makeshift waterbutt delivered tomorrow (one of them big blue containers from a food factory). Will this device be what I need to collect the water from the vertical downpipe? My downpipe is the normal round type

This might sound a silly question but is your gutter 1/2 round or ogee, ogee as a flat bottom surface.
