  • Hello...

Just a thread to introduce myself, really!

I stumbled across this site last night and it looks really good, really useful! My five year old and I have 'big(ish) plans' to grow stuff this year - however having failed utterly to even manage a sunflower properly previously (memo to self: plants need water, and planting out), I'm cacking myself that it's all going to go horribly wrong...anyway, I've just been and bought a load of seeds and one of these and a liner and we're going to try a square foot gardening type approach, which looks fairly foolproof as long as we remember to water it . We've also got four seed pots off my dad and a plastic dustbin to grow them in. Now all I need is to work out what kind of 'filling' to use and we'll be ready to set it all up. I know we need to wait a bit before planting though.

So that's us - we're near Castleford in West Yorks incidentally.

Welcome to the Vine, Lucy - if even a fraction of the enthusiasm that you'll come across here rubs off on you, then you'll have half the garden down to veg's by the end of the year!

Hi Lucy & welcome, I'm sure you'll do fine especially with the help available on the grapevine, there's usually someone here who can help with any problems or at least cheer you up if anything goes wrong!

Hello and welcome to the Vine. I am sure you and your youngster will have a great time experimenting with your growing. Even better, you will enjoy the eating bit!!

And the seed pots will grow in ordinary multi-purpose compost - just mix in some well rotted manure or chicken manure pellets at planting time - and definately don't forget to water them

                  Hi Lucym
I too garden and grow veg with a 5 year old, it's a lot of fun, so long as you don't get too hung up on things being moved, re-planted etc.
Sure you'll make a success of it, especially with all the advice you will get from your fellow grapes here on the Vine. Just don't be afraid to ask - we all had to start sometime, and you will be amazed at just how quickly you'll pick things up.
                  Good luck

                      \hi Lucym
I have taken on a plot to ensure my children know where their food really comes from.
My daughter (8) grew some carrots last year but they never even reached the kitchen!
Im sure you will have great success - even if the veg dont grow, spending time with your children in such a positive way is a sure way of successful parenting!
                      Good luck

Hi lucym and welcome. I garden with a four year old whose fave jobs are sowing seeds and worm sitting, ie finding them when her father or I are digging and moving them to a hole she has dug and playing with them. We have worms who can use a slide or swing with a little assistance

Take your time and remember to breathe. I'm sure it will be fine. Remember to take some notes too so that you know what works and what doesn't. We've all had to start somewhere and there are a lot of us here who are still very new to GYO but we manage to find someone who knows, have lots of laughs and all learn lots.
                            Bright Blessings
