Brocolli and Cabbage.

Hi folks.

I have a few dumb questions...

Below I have a picture of my Brocolli and Cabbages. Just wondering, how do I know if they're ready? Also how do I pick them? The Cabbages are going purple.

Also, I have Strawberry plants that are producing runners. What do I do with the runners?

Final silly question. I have a Tomato plant and it's around 4 feet tall and it has flowered. I have had it for months! No Tomatoes though. Any hints/tips?

I would get the calabrese (brocolli) in the pan soon or it will go past its best (it is about to break into flower). For the cabbage, cut the head (the firm bit in the middle of the leaves) when it is big enough for your needs - I have read that if you then cut a cross into the cut stalk, they can sometimes develop new, smaller heads. strawberry runners can be rooted into little pots of soil / multipurpose compst and cut from the parent plant once they are rooted securely - or you can simply cut them off and throw them on the compost heap. Your tomato should be showing signs of fruits where the flowers were, if not they didn't get fertilised (don't know what would cause that as they usually manage to self-pollinate)

Everything Shirl said. You've done well, so get the calabrese harvested before it's too late. If the tomato has flowered, you should be seeing little tomatoes developing where the flowers were.

it looks like you have a few cabbages in that space. Might be worth picking some of them and letting the rest heart up [if they are hearting types that is ]

Your cabbages are very squashed together: what variety, and what distance apart did the pack advise?

Calabrese looks yummy.

Not much info given on the tomato: where planted? I'm guessing you sowed late, and/or it's in a cold place.
