olive tree unhappy?

Hello,

I got a small olive tree a few weeks ago and re-potted it using some gravel, John Innes No. 3 soil and a root grow mixture. I have also fed it some fertilizer once or twice. Now I noticed that the tips of some of the leaves are brownish. It hasn't dropped many leaves and generally seems happy but there is also some transparent, slightly sticky, liquid substance coming out of some of the leaves recently (mostly at the tips as well). I can't see any signs of a pest that could be responsible for the liquid but then I am totally new to growing olive trees, so I have no idea. Do I have to worry?

Hello there!

Where are you keeping it? I kept my Olive tree (about 4 inches high) in a cold room for ages, leaves went brown starting at the tips and just dropped off... then when I put it somewhere warmer (a lot - it's currently in a greenhouse) it sprung back into life and is growing away happily. In the 4 odd years I've owned it, it's only started to grow, since being moved to the GH - so that may be due to more light, or more warmth.... not really sure.

Some plants will weep liquid from the leaf tips as a way of shedding excess water.
So your olive might be peeing because it is a wee bit too wet around the feet...? !
You can't go wrong putting them in the heat, that's for sure.

Thanks for your replies (I am surely going to try the music ).

It might generally be a bit too wet for an olive tree at the moment, I read somewhere that this might happen when water can no longer evaporate properly because the air is too humid and thinking about I did notice it first after I watered it. At the moment the soil seems pretty dry but it's a fairly large pot (10inch for a 3ft tree). How often do you think I should water it?

It's inside a normal (quite big and sometimes cold) room, close to a window, so moving it to somewhere warmer could definitely help.
