Help needed urgently, Topsoil or a mix needed cheap?

Hi there,

I have just changed my garden (NEW) and need to fill up beds I have created. The soil is sandy,rubble and stones. Does anybody know if I should buy bulk topsoil or compost. or mushroom compost or a mix to fill them??????????

2 Beds are for plants and one for veg.

The cheapest I can seem to find is Rowlan( Tesco voucher double up brings it in at half price from £119-00 with free delivery if I order by tomorrow!)

Or does anyone know of a cheaper source in Dumfries area?

Your help would be appreciated, as the amount of bricks rocks etc.that came out, has really impacted on level of the the beds.

is there not a local freebie paper in your area,we have one that covers ayrshire and i have seen ads for topsoil quite often,some councils sell compost,so it might be worth asking..good luck...

There's no rush to fill them, surely? You probably won't be planting in them until the spring?

There's always topsoil available for free, but the quality won't be tip top like with "screened" topsoil (about £100 a tonne)

I decided to wait a little while and see what I can find. I have posted on the local freecycle.
Our council does not have anything on their site at all except about home composting,which I am doing,but as it is a new garden I cannot do it fast enough.

I have bought some bags of compost and will dig it in together with some of the soil from my new veg bed into the border, in order to get at least one bed sorted, while there is weather to do it in!
Some of the shrubs need moving soon ( Autumn), so I have no choice.I planted loads of stuff that I brought in pots and was given, whilst clearing the brambles and rose-hips when we moved in last spring. That was the all there was in the garden, barring rocks and rubble.
I will put some photo's up shortly.

However, is spent mushroom compost any good, or compost or muck? I am really confused over all the types available!

Check your local Travis Perkins channel partners - such as Wickes, Jewsons etc - they often sell Rolawn Products significantly cheaper (£75/cubic metre bag delivered was the cheapest I came - for the 'blended loam mix'). They have a calculator on their site for you to calculate how much product you'd need too....

go and steal all the brown bins when they get put out for collection .... and add the contents to your own compost ..... or is that just me?

I would love to, but they do not do separate waste bins in our area. All goes into the one. I have asked my neighbors for hedge cuttings etc, but only managed to get from one as the rest compost themselves. I have 2 small bins to get some whist the other is composting.

Good suggestion though!

Hi there and thanks, but I already did that.

Cheapest Rowlawn I could come up with was the £119-00 ( Wickes and Tesco)+ delivery. That's why I thought to use Tesco offer!

Just like now having to pay for rubbish broadband(£17-00)instead of free as it was when I lived in Milton Keynes) Everything is more expensive ,tyres, mot and service due to the fact that suppliers have a captive market with less competition!
