I have just got another allotment again,I was wondering if anyone knows if it is ok to plant a privet hedge instead of building a fence?

You would have to check the local bye laws for the site - I would guess not as it would cast shade over adjacent plots & Privet is a very hungry plant

I think you would have to check your "terms and conditions" Muriel. and privet is a lot of work for no return.

Why privet? Dense, green and non-edible.

Try a native species like hazel. It can be made to grow multi-stemmed so it is a barrier, can be kept small, has beautiful leaves, costs next to nowt, is brilliant for wildlife and has edible nuts.
