  • Growing peas in pots

Me and the kids sowed peas (Little Marvel and Oregon sugarpod) the other week into 3" pots. I now have about 17 of each type shooting well (all about 2-3" tall).

Should I pot them into a larger tub now? I'm planning on keeping them in tubs so should they now be going into their final pot? What size pot would you suggest and how many plants to a pot.

Sorry for all the questions! I have tried searching on here but can't seem to find the answers I need (although I am getting loads of ideas on what to try next - all the enthusiasm on here is sooooo infectious ).

    Thanks for your time.

If you're planning to grow them in large pots or tubs, I would plant them into those now. Too much transplanting doesn't do them any good and if they're growing well they could go into their permanent homes now. They will need a fair amount of compost for the roots although they don't need to be spaced very far apart. Not sure about your varieties as far as height goes, you need to check the seed packet. If they're tall ones you could plant in a large pot ( 14 - 16 inch) with a wigwam of canes to support them. Whatever sort of container you use you will need some sort of support system, even if they're dwarf varieties.

      Hi Flutterby
Oregon Sugarpod will grow to about 120 cm high (4ft in old money). Not sure about growing them in pots, but my advice would be to plant them at the recommended spacing -about 5-7cm (2 - 3 inches in old money) in the pot and grow them up a wigwam of canes. Alternatively, plant them in a trough with a cane and pea net support at the back of it. Will need to be fairly deep as they have a vigourous root system.
Same applies to Little Marvel, but it only grows to about 38cm (15 inches old money) so less support required.

You will have to feed them if they are in pots as the compsot will loose all its goodness before the peas are finished.

Thanks for the advice - can't wait to get out there today as the weather is fab down here in sunny southampton!

Just another quickie - sorry - but what plant food would you recommend. Tried getting some at a nursery yesterday but was totally overwhelmed by the choice. Do I need different foods for different plants or is there just one that would suit all?

          Thanks in advance
