Growing In A Bath Tub

Ive just skip raided a bath tub and I was going to put it over in the allotment to grow come root veggies in - carrots, parsnips etc

Is this a good idea? Or should I use it for something else? My soil is very stoney so it seemed a good idea.

If I did use it for that, whats the best mix of compost etc to fill it?

I've grown parsnips in a builders tub it's about the same depth but half as long as bath and I filled it with sieved compost out my dalek.

Seemed to work out OK apart from it's taken ages thaw out this year so getting the parsnips out has been a bit of a problem.

I've found bath tubs to be excellent containers for growing a huge variety of produce. Certainly they work very well for roots in my opinion, and they can also be covered easily with fleece etc. Definitely a good find in my opinion!

Go for it, they're brilliant, I wish I hadn't given my zinc baths away to a local farmer for water troughs. Oh, hindesight is a wonderful thing.

I took your advice and went for it! They did have another 5 to get rid of in the refit but I drew the line at the 3 Luckily I have another half allotment plot this year so Im going to put them on there.

Already this afternoon other plot holders are asking me where I got them from!

What a great idea. We have an old one at the stables. It used to be used as a water trough, but is no longer water-tight. I think I know where it's going to disappear to!

Just remember to leave the plug out!!!!

Glutton, I think Ill take the taps off too ..... my OH may just try and connect the hosepipe to them in the summer

He has now said he is going to make me a nice wooden surround to box them all in ...... super smart raised beds!!!

Yep I think bath tubs are an excellent idea as raised beds, and can be used as an excellent wall/boundry. Plus great for a couple of blackberries and stuff, that need ericaceous compost. Or containing a wide range of mints.

You could also add some insulation to the outside of the baths, before you surround with wood/adapted pallets.

Take another look in the skip and you might find they have also thrown away loads of insulation jackets. I've used them around and on top of my pallet compost bin.

Enjoy your new little project, as it's always exciting adapting and creating new things for the lottie.

I also have a bathtub on my plot - it's great! Right now it has my blueberry bushes in it (because they need special compost).

some great ideas here! I have 2 old bathtubs cluttering up the horses field and had no idea what to do with them......think you guys have just 'solved' it for me!

Will pop them in the pig area once the pigs have gone...some great compost for them there too!

I didnt think of this one, what a fab idea! Im going to send the OH over there tomorrow and see what he can get off the builders. They will probably think we are mad

I think you have to be slightly mad to grow veg, it helps!

I use my three baths to grow comfrey as it's fabulous when used as a fertilizer but will take over half the plot if not kept in hand.

I was thinking about getting some comfrey to plant in a large tub, but is it better to grow from seed or cuttings, and how much? And then how to I mix for fertilizer?

im going to have a bathtub full of hebs next to my shed on the lottie.
