Broad Beans

Hi,
Me again with another newbie stupid question! I planted some aquadulce broad beans on the 4th January outside in a grow bag but I had two beans left over so I planted them one each in a 6 inch deep pot and put them on the windowsill. Anyway as a complete novice grower I automatically think nothing will ever grow but today a green shoot has appeared in one of the pots. I got all excited about it and showed every caller today! Anyway my question is will the 2 beans in the pots have to be replanted in bigger pot or is a 6 inch pot good enough? What size would be the smallest adequate size? Thanks

What a good experiment that will be! I would leave the beans in the 6 inch pots, they should grow. I plant mine about 8 inch apart in the soil so can't see why they wouldn't grow in a 6 inch pot.

Thanks for the reply, I'll just leave them in and see what happens. I was just concerned that there may not be enough room for the roots but I have some growing outside so I'll just leave these two and see how it goes. It would be handy space wise if they were successful in 6 inch pots!

Why not plant one out when you need to, to compare the differences in growth, yeild, and size of beans etc?

I would have thought you would have to "pot them on" to a bigger pot when the plant gets bigger, but never having grown these in pots before, only in open ground, it will be an interesting experiment for you. Well done!

You might find that you have two "gaps" in your outdoor row, in which case you might decide to plant them there? (Harden them off first though ...). They will be quite a bit ahead of the outdoor ones.

I never thought about gaps so they will prove handy for that, if not I'll leave them grow and see what happens. Only one of the indoor ones is up at the moment so I had a look for the other one and it was quite far down the pot and I'm sure growing the wrong way so i turned it round and put it closer to the surface. Not knowing what I am doing I probably planted it upside down!

Plants sort themselves out when that happens - just might delay them a bit!
