  • Growing peppers

    Hi,
Last year I grew peppers (capsicum) from seeds out of a pepper from the supermarket.
They grew well inside on the windowsill and I got some small peppers from them. They tasted good, but had quite thin flesh.
What i was really interested to know is, Would i have done better if I had grown them from a proper pack of seeds rather than just from a pepper itself?
Is there any feed you would reccomend for peppers?
I was giving them seaweed liquid feed- perhaps not often enough though.
    thanks!

A lot of the supermarket veg, especially tomatoes and peppers are F1 varieties. This gives the supermarkets the uniformity that they require, very often at the expense of taste I might add.

Unfortunately for the home seed savers the resulting seed doesnt come true and will be any vatiation of the parent plants and anything in between. Sometimes the seed comes good but very often its not worth the risk and as you found out the fruits of your labours are poor.

As for reccomendations, any from the "Real Seed Company" or "Seeds of Italy" are good.

Hi there Mushroom, and welcome to the vine.
Once you have grown your own non F1 varieties you will be able to save seed and use in coming years (I hope). This is what I intend to do. Will let you know if it works.

I agree with Pigletwillie, Real Seeds have a good selection of non F1 seeds and are well worth a try, I've resown some I got from them last year, Rainbow chillies which start purple and mature to red and Lemon Drop chillies, zingy lemon yello, both look spectacular and taste very good. They have good bell peppers too.
        best wishes

I've sown some seeds I saved from the long red and yellow pointy peppers you get in the supermarket. OH loves them, and as they will be free, anything that comes out of it will be a bonus!

I'm also sowing some other peppers from bought seed, just in case the supermarket ones don't work...
