  • Compost for Potatoe Pots

Have just found a hugh (20' x 10' x4') stack of 2 year (at least) old horse manure which I can have for free. there is still some evidence of the wood chips used with straw for bedding but otherwise nice and crumbly. To save money I wonder if I could use it instead of shop bought compost for growing my pots in pots.
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

I'm doing the same with well rotted cow muck as an experiment!

Hopefully once the potatoes are harvested I can tip out the compost and use it as a mulch on my beds

My first thoughts were that it may be too strong. On second thoughts though...I'd be interested in the outcome!

Once it's well rotted, it should be just like very rich soil - wonderful !
          Wish I had some....

Ideal Grandpa, Potatoes are a hungry crop and the moisure will be ideal. If you've got any old compost bags fill those and use it for home made growbags as well as Toms will love it.

Another four weeks on and toms and pots all still growing like crazy. Was away last week which was sunny and when I got back compost still moist.

As each horse produces about 1 growbagsworth of equipoo a day (we have 3 horses), just about everything in my patch is grown in the stuff although I mix it with soil to make it more manageable. Today I filled the courgette beds with a mixture of rotted equipoo and loam. I'll also put the tomatoes out at the back of the same beds tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

We have a friend who is a dairy farmer. Hoping to get my hands (well, spade) on some bovipoo at the end of the year!
