Shaded area

Hi

I have a small area down the side of my house which is quite shady and wondered what variety of veg would grow best there preferrably a climbing variety as it isn't a big area . Initially I was hoping for cucumbers there but I think they'll needlots of sun. Please advise !

Most veg needs a good deal of sunshine. You might get leafy crops eg salads to do OK in the shade, but not anything that fruits eg pumpkins

You might manage perpetual spinach there as well

Remember to watch out for slugs as they like the shade too!
Some fruit does ok in the shade - blackcurrants and morello cherries spring to mind, both can be fan trained up a wall...

Curly kale has done well for me in the shade too.

Radishes and spring onions also.

Hey Jono thanks i have some Kale in seedling form can you tell me what height it grows too (or does it depend on variety?) as i saw on the programme 'edible garden' it grew tall and you harvested the leaves ???

Thanks, glad you like the blog.

Depends if you grow dwarf or stalk variety. The dwarf ones would be good in a container I reckon. They grow small, but the stalk varieties will grow up to about 4 feet.
