Hi Pottypotter - so many questions, so little time!
For your tuber in a pot you need about 4inches of compost underneath it & about 10-12 inches above it I would say. Most people usually start with just 3 or 4 inches above the tuber & earth it up as the shoots grow. You can grow them in smaller pots with less compost above them but will probably get fewer potatoes out. As for yield from 10 seed potatoes it could be anything depending on the variety, where you plant them etc. Some people just get a few pounds in weight, some could probably get 10 or more, I'm sure I read somewhere about a man getting a couple of hundred pounds of potatoes once from a couple of seed potatoes!

Sorry Potty, I was just reading something else. Yes I mean just earth up till you reach nearly the top of the pot that you're using, just leave a little gap for watering.

Hi Pottypotter, another idea, if you have a heated greenhouse, is to keep three seeds back until August, then stick then in a tub in the greenhouse and you can have new spuds fresh out of the soil for Christmas/khanuka

                I have another potatoey question.

I've been chitting some potatoes for about six weeks now and I think they're finally ready to plant. I'm planning on planting them in a big container but the container will be outside in the garden. Once I've planted them, will they be ruined by frost? The weather has been so unpredictable recently.

They should be fine - it will be a while before the sprouts get above soil and they are the fragile bit. If you are worried, you could always bring them indoors for the night or wrap them with fleece.
