purple sprouting brocolli and ice gem lettuce

got some of these seeds from wilkinsons over the weekend as they had a 3 for 2 sale on.

the lettuce, they recommend to plant straight outside and the brocolli is the same. it best to plant outside or indoors, then transfer out when ready?

won't be planting them until may onwards as thats around the mid of hte sowing season indicated on teh packet.

I sow most of my brassicas and lettuce in modules but neither of them needs heat so they will get sown in the unheated greenhouse. Will pot the PSB on a couple of times from an April sowing (works for me) before planting out in early Juneish when they're big enough to fight the slugs etc. Cut and come again lettuce gets directly sown but the heading ones also are sown in modules as I find they just get munched otherwise.

opened my packet of purple sprouting brocolli seeds and they are TINY! miniscule! do i just sprinkle them directly outdoors directly in the veg patch or sow them individually in pots first, then trnsfer when they are bigger?

I always sow veg in modules, because direct sowings are often eaten by pests: bigger, older plants are more resistant

ok. one seed per nodule? the seeds are so small i nearly sprinkled a few in each nodule.

I always like to put 2 seeds in each module then remove the weakest seedling.

I expect that "Tiny" is a relative term, but mine PSB seeds aren't what I would call tiny. They looks the same as Cabbage and Sprouts seeds to me and probably about 1mm in diameter - are yours smaller than that?

Mine are about 1mm diameter. Tiny compared with the other seeds I planted. I got 400 of the seeds in the packet, I'm thinking these are grow once veg. Either that or I'm gonna get a LOT of psb if they are regrowing ones.

eeerrrrrm, how big to psb grow? pretty much all of the seeds i've planted have sprouted. they are now nearly an inch tall, still looking a bit skinny. i have a feeling i'm going to be turning into a purple sprouting brocolli soon.

Have not grown it for a year or two but I think it grew to about 4ft tall.

Yeah, they grow big I planted about 10 across a 3.5' width bed. Thinned to 5, still too many. 1 Plant would have been enough (width ways) imo. It grew rather large and wide!

update on my psb. i've left them out int he garden to their own devices and at hte end of summer they were about 4ft tall, they have now shrunk to about 3 ft. still no food off them
