  • Planting help ...

    Hi guys,

I've recently had a part of my garden dug over and it is ready to plant up, however it has turned out to be a lot larger than i expected and i'm not really sure what to plant to make the best use of the space. I normally just buy things that i like, bung them in and hope for the best - which usually results in me having to move them round at a later date! But i'd like to get this one right, especially as its a larger area than i've planted before ... pictures and details are in my latest blog post so see below for link. I'd love to hear your suggestions and ideas for it.

(I tried to post pics on here but they were too big & i couldn't figure out the resizing!)

You've not given us a lot to go on...?

Are you thinking veg, flowers, shrubs, herbaceous or what? Any colour scheme in mind? What's the soil and the aspect like?

Just had a quick scan of your blog Newbie - I'm v jealous of your space and you seem to be well on your way (despite your name!). I'd definately do more sweetcorn and peas and as you have the space why not try beans that you can dry (read what you said about the dwarf frenchies) you need a lot of space to get enough for drying.

Just shove a few squashes in if you have too much space.

I was thinking large shrubs towards the back as a back drop and i've already planted a Damson & Plum tree towards the front either side of centre, and there are the two existing compost bins and two existing Rhubarb plants, but other than that its a blank canvas which is why i'm a little daunted i think.

At the moment i'm thinking of using it as a veg plot overflow i.e Pumpkins, Squash, things that take up a lot of space until i can get a plan formed. The soil is quite good except for the far right hand side which is clay, and it faces south-ish but our garden is surrounded by tall trees so has some shade.
