germination query

I need some help.

I sowed some seeds in trays, modules, degradable pots some with propagator lids, some not.

I've only had about five or six things germinate from the 40-50 sowing.

I've planted leeks, Chillies, peppers, courgettes, carrots, runner beans, French beans, flowers, peas, cucumbers. It is only the cucumbers that have germinated.

I watered when sown and looked after them since, but nothing.

Should I start again this weekend?

How long ago did you sow the seeds? Chillies, peppers and (as i've just found out) leeks all take a while to germinate, and chillies/peppers like it warm. Carrots can take time as well. If your cucumber have shown your courgette can't be far behind.

You don't say when you sowed? I'd expect peas to be the first things up. Carrots like warm soil, chillies & tomatoes need a higher heat (about 16c day and night)

If your compost is cold & wet the seeds will root. Have a rootle around the pea seeds and see what's happening to those

Sorry thought I'd said. I sowed on 9th of Apr. Would it be worth starting Chillies and peppers in house before moving then to poly greenhouse?

Mantha81 - give them a while longer - I sowed a few bits around the same time and some have just started to sprout, others no sign of anything yet - mine are in the shed or coldframe. I just water them and wait. I'm sure yours will come up soon.

Yes it would. They need a constant warm temp of about 16c (that means day and night)

Hi Mantha, I have noticed some of the seeds take a LONG time to germinate... made to seem even longer by my excited daily checking and enthusiasm. But most of the things I have sown do eventually come through. Some tomatoes and peppers seem to take a while.
I did have one tray sown with half spinach half salad leaf that failed to germinate at all, with no apparent reason why, but that's okay, I will just plant again.
9th April isn't that long ago so I would still give them more time. But you could always sow some more anyway, just in case.

Any ideas with nasturiums? I've read they are supposed to be quick germinators, but had no shows, twice!

Nasturtiums like warm soil, the self-sown ones haven't come up on the lotty yet (they will)

The ones we sowed in the gh at school 2 weeks ago are just up (not all of them though: some will have been eaten by snails, others will have roasted in the drought)

I think mine might have been roasted. Can't believe I'm actually ankering after some cooler days with rain!

I sowed some old nasturtium seeds on 9th April and they started to germinate from the 21st April. I didn't think they would germinate as I had purchased in 2008 (sow by 2009) but never got round to planting them so thought why not give it a go! They were in the blowaway for a week or so but then got relegated outside as I really didn't think they would germinate and needed the space. 20 of the 25 seeds germinated although 2 seem a little stunted and not sure how they will develop. But still pretty good rate I would say! I sowed 5 per pot in ~5" pots.
