Seaweed

At the risk of showing my ignorance I am concerned that there appears to be a lot of advice around suggesting seaweed is good for mulching and providing organic matter. I have an almost endless supply but was under the impression that salt water would be bad for the garden. Is there any answer. I would love to use the natural and freely available seaweed but am a bit worried. For example does it need to be dried (or even rinsed in fresh water), are any particular types better than others, how much can safely be applied.

Salty seaweed mulch...bad for slugs I reckon

(my sis-in-law once fed her pet African Snails with salted lettuce off her plate...dire results)
