  • Help! Squishy onions!

    Hello All,

I planted out 18 onion sets on 3rd April. I planted them only half buried on the advice of the seller. Most of them have grown shoots about 4" high now, a few haven't put up any growth. Anyway I have noticed some of them (with shoots) the bulb now feels very squishy. I pulled one up and it was kind of rotten, soft and dark coloured.
Any advice? Are they rotten? Why would this have occurred?
    Thanks

The ones with shoots do lose firmness as the bulb puts its efforts into producing the leaves. They should be fine.
However the ones with no shoots and rotting will have succumbed to one of the rots that onions seem to suffer from. The worst of these is a white rot which can infect your crop, but it doesn't sound like you have this. HTH.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      Hang in there, Bronwen,
My onions did the same. I planted them back in Sept and the frost lifted a few. I noticed the squishyness when I pushed them back in, but they have firmed up and are looking good for harvesting in July.
