  • Failed Rhubarb

Hi. Last year I planted rhubarb, Timperly early and Stockbridge arrow, dreaming of all the rhubarb crumbles I would be having this year. However the plants have almost hollow/spongy stems and flop over onto the ground with yellowing leaves.I prepared the plot as per. the Book. Was it the harsh winter or is it me.? P.S. Any body want to buy a lot of crumble.?

Our Stockbridge Arrow isn't doing very well either, but the freebie unknown variety we were given is romping away. They were both well fed, both have been well watered, so I haven't a clue what's going wrong.

Mine started off fine but since the weather turned dry and hot it has gone floppy. Lots of water will be the answer.

Did it start growing OK? Is the sponginess a recent thing? Also, whereabouts are you - it would help enormously if you add your location to your profile.

My very early one at the allotment is going spongy and yellow. They don't last all year round and you are supposed to stop pulling them in July anyway. It may just be natural maturity. Don't write it off till next spring!
