  • strange fruit what is it ?

    Hi,
A while ago trawling the internet for seeds and whatavya I came across tomato tree seeds...when they arrived ..done the business and put them in the polytunnel...now they are well on their way but they are not tomato trees, two different plants have emerged having said that they seem to be producing the same fruit/veg ...the plant itself looks like a cucumber plant but a lot smaller and the leaves are scratchy on the back..the other plant has leaves a bit like an oak, wavy round the edges...sooooo without further adoo I've posted some pics to see if anyone can tell me what I'm growing please...Steve

One looks almost like cucumis zeyheri, "Spiny South African Cucumber", but it probably isn't even though the leaves are almost right.

There's something called a Hedgehog Cucumber, could it be one of those?

I don't know anything about them, but I was intrigued so did a search for "prickly cucumber", then for "very prickly cucumber", and looked at the pictures.

It's definitely one of the spiky cukes. There seem to be alot round these days so could be any of the different types.

The seeds of those are black, shaped almost rectangular with the corners munched off. [Or are like cucumber seeds - depends on the variety]

Tomato tree seeds are also black, but small and round - about 2mm max in diameter.

You don't still have some seeds do you? And the packet?

And on the order - what was the actual Tree Tomato type?

Thanks for the replies, sorry I used all the seeds and thrown the packet away but the tomato seeds I sent for was Cyphomandra betacea but the plants I've got are definitley not them ......cant wait to see the final result though I'll let you know what it is when they're full grown....Steve
